‘The Regime’ Trailer: Kate Winslet Is a Power-Hungry Politician in Her HBO Return

“Mare of Easttown” Primetime Emmy Award winner Kate Winslet is making her return to HBO — this time, as a power-hungry, insufferable political leader. Stephen Frears and Jessica Hobbs direct the series about an unraveling authoritarian ruler, with Oscar winner Winslet joined in the cast by Matthias Schoenaerts, Guillaume Gallienne, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton, and Hugh Grant. The limited series, created and showrun by Will Tracy, premieres on HBO and Max March 3. Voting for the Emmys nominations begins June 13. That may feel like a long way off, even though the 2023 Primetime Emmy Awards just happened (courtesy of the strikes) January 15. Place your easily made bets: Winslet will be part of the conversation once again this year.

“The Regime” tells the story of one year within the walls of the palace of a modern European regime as it begins to fall apart. Along with Winslet, lining up the cast are Belgian “Rust and Bone” heartthrob Schoenaerts, Gallienne, surprise 2023 Best Actress Academy Award nominee Riseborough, Plimpton, and, a usual suspect for this sort of lofty Euro political fare, recent “Wonka” star Grant. The latest trailer, which shows Winslet as a totally corrupt leader, suggests layers of moneyed darkness a la “Succession” with a dash of Armando Iannucci “Veep” satire to match the drama.

The series used to be called “The Palace,” and it’s executive-produced by Winslet, along with “Succession” producer and scribe Tracy, Frank Rich, Tracey Seaward, Frears, and Hobbs. Seth Reiss, Sarah DeLappe, Jen Spyra, “Super Sad True Love Story” author Gary Shteyngart, and Juli Weiner also serve as writers.

Winslet’s relationship with HBO extends well beyond “Mare of Easttown,” the crime drama series that dominated the online water cooler in 2021. She starred also in Todd Haynes’ “Mildred Pierce” adaptation from 2011 and is set to reteam with the “May December” director for the series “Trust,” based on Hernan Diaz’s novel of the same name. That series, if it goes, centers on a wealthy financier who reads a book based on his life who, dissatisfied by his and his wife’s portrayal, asks a secretary to ghostwrite his memoir and set the record straight.

Here’s the trailer for “The Regime,” and the official synopsis: “The darkly comedic six-episode series tells the story of life within the walls of a modern authoritarian regime as it begins to unravel. After not leaving the palace for quite some time, Chancellor Elena Vernham (Kate Winslet) has grown increasingly paranoid and unstable when she turns to a volatile soldier, Herbert Zubak (Matthias Schoenaerts), as an unlikely confidant. As Zubak’s influence over the chancellor continues to grow, Elena’s attempts to expand her power eventually result in both the palace and the country fracturing around her.”
