New Regency President Michael Schaefer to Exit

New Regency Productions president of motion picture and television Michael Schaefer is departing after seven years, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The departure is said to be amicable, made in coordination with New Regency chairman and CEO, Yariv Milchan.

Schaefer has been with New Regency since 2016, and recently oversaw the low-budget hit Barbarian, which turned filmmaker Zach Cregger into a top name in horror. Other recent film titles under his watch included Deep Water, starring Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas, as well as filmmaker Robert Eggers The Northman, which starred Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, and Willem Dafoe. New Regency next has Jeff Nichols’ The Bikeriders due out Dec. 1, with the film starring Austin Butler, Jodie Comer, Tom Hardy, and Michael Shannon. Schaefer also produced Steve McQueen‘s Blitz, the World War II feature due out on Apple next year.

On the TV front, he has worked on the upcoming Donald Glover iteration of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, due out from Amazon, as well as the recent Apple series The Crowded Room, starring Tom Holland. He also executive produced Amazon’s Swarm.

Schaefer previously worked at Ridley Scott’s production banner Scott Free, and is now transitioning to producing. Before Scott Free, Schaefer, worked at Summit Entertainment.
