Reflecting on Vanderpump Rules: Jax and Brittany Take Kentucky

It seems to me that Jax Taylor always wanted to stay on TV, even when he was booted from Vanderpump Rules. He was the villain, turned the number one guy in the group, and wanted to cash in on his name. While dating Brittany Cartwright, the two starred in Jax and Brittany Take Kentucky, which basically is the Simple Life meets Newlyweds. It was a humorous fish-out-of-water story as Jax tried his best to work on the family farm. The series gave us some priceless moments, but city-loving Jax really wasn’t meant to be a farm hand.

The series was short-lived and didn’t get picked up for another season. Instead, the couple is now back on The Valley, which is attempting to show them all grown up, but we all know Jax can’t be on his best behavior for too long. And he often proved this on their first spin-off.

Kentucky or bust!

To be honest, the only thing I knew about Kentucky was that they held the famed horse race at Churchill Downs. The premiere episode showed just how beautiful “God’s country” was, as the land was vast. I reckon the greenery could have hurt Jax’s eyes since he was used to so much concrete.

Winchester, KY, is a small town with citizens who fall into the home-rule class. There is a quaint downtown but no Neiman Marcus, a country store but no Costco, and Meemaws beer and cheese. Brittany shared that she grew up on a 400-acre farm and loved the small-town feel. Jax didn’t fit in, especially when they put him to work cleaning out the chicken coop.

Prayer time

Brittany was close to God and often went to her family church. But Jax, Jax, I worried he would burst into flames if he crossed the church’s threshold. The church scene showed just how close this community was as parishioners greeted one another with hugs and kind words. Jax looked genuinely confused about why everyone was being so friendly. Jax even joked, “Lightning didn’t strike, so I’m good so far.” Brittany seemed to be a mini-celebrity in her hometown as she made the royal wave to her loyal followers.

Honestly, this scene was intense as the “Holy Ghost” got a hold of numerous people. Jax’s eyes said it all as he quietly observed the people around him lose their minds as if it was Jesus Christ Super Star coming down to say, “Hey y’all.” Viewers and Jax learned that the “devil will come against your marriage, friendship, and finances.” It was all a bit much, but the scene gave some great insight into the kind of family Jax would later marry.

Brittany seemed gaslit

The series also seemed to highlight how Brittany was often gaslit by Jax and her mother, Sherri. The series made me develop a bit of empathy for B, especially since everyone around her was trying to convince her that Jax was some amazing catch. At times, Brittany seemed to question her relationship, but every single time, one of her family members would convince her to stay. Fans also met Brittany’s ex-boyfriend who was also fine at best. Clearly, she had a type. In my opinion, Sherri had an unhealthy obsession with Jax, and her husband, Ron, should have been listened to more since he was the only one wary of the Vanderpump Rules star.

Jax was insufferable

A scene that I will never forget is when the family went to mourn Brittany’s grandfather at the cemetery. While the entire family cried and listened to the widow share her memories, Jax walked away, sat on the stoop, and looked uninterested. I understand that funerals might not be his thing, but there is a common sense of decency that went a miss. These actions, along with others like telling Brittany she gained weight, just proved that Jax was still a villain. Jax and Brittany Take Kentucky had six episodes of Jax behaving badly and Brittany making excuses for him. But both are proud of the sort lived series and even have it in their bios to this day.
