Reese Witherspoon producing “Legally Blonde ”prequel series about Elle Woods' high school years

Reese Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine will produce a Legally Blonde prequel series titled Elle, centered on future lawyer Elle Woods' during her high school years, Amazon Prime Video announced Tuesday at its inaugural upfront presentation.

Laura Kittrell (High School, Insecure) will serve as showrunner and executive producer alongside Witherspoon, Lauren Neustadter, Lauren Kisilevsky, and Marc Platt. No details yet on casting and a premiere date.

"I truly couldn’t be more excited about this series," Witherspoon said in a statement. "Fans will get to know how Elle Woods navigated her world as a teenager with her distinct personality and ingenuity, in ways that only our beloved Elle could do. What could be better than that?"

From director Robert Luketic, the cult classic 2001 film starred Witherspoon as sorority queen Elle who enrolls at Harvard law school in the hopes of getting her boyfriend (Matthew Davis) back. It starred Jennifer Coolidge, Luke Wilson, Selma Blair, and Linda Cardellini and spawned the 2003 sequel Red, White & Blonde.

A third film from writer Mindy Kaling has been in the works for quite some time, and it was previously reported last month that Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine was also developing a separate Legally Blonde spinoff series with Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage attached as writers.
