Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth got engaged less than a year after meeting in 2010. Just days before their 12-year wedding anniversary, the pair announced their "difficult decision" to divorce
Reese Witherspoon and her husband Jim Toth are going their separate ways after 12 years of marriage.
The actress and the talent agent announced the news on Instagram with a joint statement on March 24, writing that they made the "difficult decision to divorce" with "a great deal of care and consideration." The pair added that they're focused on their family, including their 10-year-old son Tennesee James, amid their split and asked for privacy.
A source told PEOPLE of the breakup, "They really are the best of friends and this is such an amicable decision. They are so committed to co-parenting together. They are invested in their whole family and making this as smooth as possible for everyone."
In August, the couple settled their divorce and agreed to a parenting plan for their son.
Witherspoon and Toth first sparked dating rumors in February 2010 after they were spotted having dinner together in Santa Monica. By that December, they were engaged.
The couple married in March 2011 during a laid-back wedding on Witherspoon's ranch in Ojai, California. Toth quickly bonded with Witherspoon's two children, Deacon and Ava Phillippe, whom she shares with actor Ryan Phillippe, and the couple welcomed a son of their own, Tennessee James, in September 2012.

In a 2012 interview with Elle, the Oscar winner dished about her first meeting with Toth, whom she met at a friend's house shortly after her split from Jake Gyllenhaal. "It happened out of the blue," she recalled. "This really drunk guy was hitting on me, making such an idiot of himself, yelling at me. He was, like, [slurring, scowling, pointing finger in her face] 'You don't know me.' And I was like, 'Yeah, I know. I don't know you!' "
She continued, "Jim came over and said, 'Please excuse my friend. He's just broken up with someone.' Jim was a really good friend, pulling him out of that situation. That's just kind of who he is, a really good person."

The budding couple sparked romance rumors during a dinner date at Santa Monica eatery Locanda Portofino, with a fellow diner telling PEOPLE the pair spent nearly two hours at the Italian hotspot and were "very flirtatious throughout dinner." The source added, "They were having a lot of fun, totally getting along and laughing and talking the whole dinner. Reese seemed very happy. She was smiling all dinner. The mood was upbeat and really good."
March 20, 2010: Reese Witherspoon includes Jim Toth in her birthday celebration
PEOPLE exclusively reported that the Legally Blonde star celebrated her birthday with close pals and brought Toth along. The Pennsylvania native got the seal of approval from Witherspoon's friends, prompting her to introduce him to her children. The foursome also spent time together over Easter weekend.

PEOPLE confirmed their engagement after a courtship of less than a year. In her 2012 Elle interview, the Walk the Line star admitted she never thought she'd get married again after her divorce from Phillippe. She told the magazine, "Jim said, 'I'm gonna show you every day what a good partner is, what a good person is. I'm going to take care of you. March 24, 2023: Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth announce their divorce
Just days before their 12-year wedding anniversary, Witherspoon and Toth announced they were ending their marriage.
"We have some personal news to share... It is with a great deal of care and consideration that we have made the difficult decision to divorce," they wrote in a joint statement on Instagram. "We have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward with deep love, kindness and mutual respect for everything we have created together."
"Our biggest priority is our son and our entire family as we navigate this next chapter," they added. "These matters are never easy and are extremely personal. We truly appreciate everyone's respect for our family's privacy at this time."
March 27, 2023: Source says Reese Witherspoon is "disappointed and upset" about divorce from Jim Toth
A source told PEOPLE that Witherspoon "never saw herself getting another divorce" but that she and Toth are "very different people." The insider described the Legally Blonde star as "headstrong and focused," while they called Toth "more laidback."
The source added: "Reese is obviously disappointed and upset. They love Tennessee and this is their focus. They will continue to co-parent amicably. There is no drama."
April 1, 2023: Reese Witherspoon officially files for divorce from Jim Toth
Witherspoon filed for divorce in the Circuit Court of Davidson County, Tenn. According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, she listed "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the couple's split. The documents also revealed that the Sweet Home Alabama star and Toth have a prenup in place.
Additionally, Witherspoon asked the court to designate her and the CAA agent as joint custodians of their son, Tennessee.
Shortly after the couple announced their divorce, a source told PEOPLE that Witherspoon and Toth had been "spending less time together" due to the actress' busy work schedule.
"They didn't come to the decision to divorce easily and hastily. It took a long time," the insider added. "This is so hard for both of them. There's no drama. These decisions are so difficult when there is so much friendship and love there."
A second source told PEOPLE that Witherspoon is leaning on her "large group of close friends" during this difficult time.
She has a lot of support," the insider said. "She is positive about her future."
April 17, 2023: Source says Reese Witherspoon has "no regrets" regarding divorce from Jim Toth
According to a source, Witherspoon is "doing much better" after announcing her divorce from Toth nearly a month ago.
"The divorce decision was not an easy one for her. It was rough to reach the decision and to announce it," the insider told PEOPLE. "She has no regrets and is just focused on her kids and work."
July 12, 2023: Reese Witherspoon says it's a "vulnerable time" for her amid divorce from Jim Toth
In her cover story for Harper's BAZAAR, Witherspoon addressed how she's feeling amid her divorce from Toth.

Four months after Toth and Witherspoon announced their divorce, the former CAA agent was spotted with a new flame.
"Jim was staying with a new girlfriend at the Sendero Nosara in Costa Rica," an onlooker confirmed to PEOPLE. "They seemed to be staying in a suite, and they looked really happy, just chilling and soaking up that pura vida vibe. It was definitely romantic."
August 2, 2023: Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth reach a divorce settlement
Witherspoon and Toth settled their divorce in the Circuit Court of Davidson County, Tennessee. The couple signed a marital dissolution agreement and agreed to a parenting plan for their son.
