Upon its August 2023 premiere, the Amazon Prime Video original film “Red, White & Royal Blue” quickly gained a massive audience, a large portion of which reportedly created new subscriptions just so they could view it. Now, the two-hour adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s 2019 novel of the same name is set to embark on a 2024 TV awards run that, of course, won’t include the delayed 75th Emmys but could more than reasonably begin with the 81st Golden Globes. If it does make its way into the upcoming Best Limited Series/TV Movie lineup, it will be the first one-off film in seven years to earn Golden Globes recognition as a general program.

Directed and co-written by Tony winner Matthew López (“The Inheritance”), “Red, White & Royal Blue” stars Taylor Zakhar Perez (“The Kissing Booth” franchise) and Nicholas Galitzine (2021’s “Cinderella”) as two fictional world leaders’ offspring whose bitter rivalry unexpectedly evolves into a romance. Perez’s Alex is the son of the sitting and campaigning U.S. president (Uma Thurman), while Galitzine’s Henry is second in line to the British throne, which is occupied by his grandfather (Stephen Fry). After a public fight forces them to feign an on-camera truce, the young men find themselves unable to stop their growing feelings for each other, leading them to worry about how their unconventional relationship will impact their families’ legacies.

SEEEmmy Nominated LGBTQ+ Characters: Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actor

Once the combined Best Limited Series/TV Movie category was established in 1981, it took until the following year for there to even be any multi-part nominees (“East of Eden” and “Masada”) and then until 1984 for there to be a lineup with a miniseries majority (led by that year’s winner, “The Thorn Birds”). Conversely, the last time telefilms dominated the category was in 2011, when “Carlos” beat “Temple Grandin” and “You Don’t Know Jack,” and the last such contender was “The Dresser,” which lost the 2017 prize to “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.”

This program award has been bestowed upon a total of 18 TV movies in the four decades since its inception. In addition to “Carlos,” this list includes “Bill” (1982), “Something About Amelia” (1985), “Promise” (1987), “Escape from Sobibor” (1988), “Poor Little Rich Girl” (1988), “Decoration Day” (1991), “One Against the Wind” (1992), “Barbarians at the Gate” (1994), “The Burning Season” (1995), “Indictment” (1996), “Rasputin” (1997), “RKO 281” (2000), “Dirty Pictures” (2001), “The Gathering Storm” (2003), “The Life and Death of Peter Sellers” (2005), “Longford” (2008) and “Grey Gardens” (2010).

The only other Golden Globe categories in which TV movies are eligible are the four corresponding acting ones, none of which have seen such a nominee since 2019. The lead performers who most recently earned bids for their work in small screen films were Laura Dern (“The Tale,” 2019) and Robert De Niro (“The Wizard of Lies,” 2018), while the last supporting players to do so were De Niro’s costar, Michelle Pfeiffer, and 2015 champ Matt Bomer (“The Normal Heart”). Bomer’s victory was preceded by those of 28 other 21st-century TV movie actors, two-thirds of whom played lead roles.

Several other telefilms released in the 2023 calendar year – including Hulu’s “Boston Strangler,” Showtime’s “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial” and HBO’s “Reality” – could possibly attract enough support to merit 2024 Golden Globe nominations, but “Red, White & Royal Blue” seems to stand the best chance of doing so. After all, it would only make sense for Prime Video’s first TV movie notice (and perhaps win) to come for one of its most undeniably popular productions.
