Red Hot Chili Peppers are this year’s MTV Video Music Awards Global Icons, and to celebrate the honor they performed “Black Summer”  and “Can’t Stop.” It marked the band’s first VMAs appearance since 2000.

The veteran rockers ran through “Black Summer,” the first single from this year’s Unlimited Lovewhich proved the perfect vehicle to show off the returning John Frusciante, who fired off a rapid-fire guitar solo. From there, RHCP launched into the By the Way classic “Can’t Stop.” Notably, drummer Chad Smith honored his friend, the late Taylor Hawkins, with a Hawk illustrated on his drum set.

According to MTV, “The Global Icon Award celebrates an artist or band whose unparalleled career, continued impact, and influence have maintained a unique level of global success in music and beyond, leaving an indelible mark on the music landscape.” The Chili Peppers join the likes of Janet Jackson, U2, and Foo Fighters in receiving the award. The band accepted their Moon Person following their performance, during which singer Anthony Kiedis thanked his bandmates, Flea thanked his wife, and Smith shouted out Hawkins. Meanwhile, guitarist John Frusciante, as Kiedis put it, “said it all with his smile.”

“Black Summer” also won the award for Best Rock at the 2022 VMAs, while the band joined BLACKPINK, BTS, City Girls, Foo Fighters, Silk Sonic, Imagine Dragons, and Måneskin in being up for Group of the Year.

It’s safe to say that 2022 has been a huge year for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. After reuniting with on-again, off-again guitarist John Frusciante, the band put out the best-selling album Unlimited Love. Now, they already have another LP, Return of the Dream Canteenon the way, which they previewed with the single “Tippa My Tongue.” The band is in the midst of a massive tour that includes a headlining spot at Austin City Limits; grab tickets to their upcoming shows here.

Be sure to revisit our inaugural cover story on the group.
