Red Hot Chili Peppers have joined the continuing wave of artists paying homage to the late Ric Ocasek. On Sunday night, the Los Angeles rockers performed their own rendition of The Cars’ 1978 hit “Just What I Needed” during their concert in Marina Bay, Singapore.
Unlike Blink-182’s woozy take on the song, RHCP brought full energy akin to the tune’s original feel. Shirtless lead-singer Anthony Kiedis gripped the mic and hammered the verses into the driving groove. As the big chorus swung around, he belted the hook, “I guess you’re just what I needed/ I needed someone to bleed.”
That wasn’t the only cover the band tackled that evening. They also delivered their classic take on Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground”, and dropped a little slice of Prince’s “Purple Rain” in the encore.

Ocasek passed away last week at the age of 75. The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner concluded that the cause of death was heart disease.
