Recent metro Phoenix restaurant closings include a 35-year-old favorite bar

So far, 2024 has brought new restaurants to the Valley and recognition for established restaurants. The James Beard Foundation nominated numerous metro Phoenix restaurants and chefs as semifinalists. But we also had to say goodbye to several spots, both new and old.

A historic gay bar closed after more than three decades, two family-owned restaurants shuttered and other newer bar and grill restaurants called it quits. Two have plans to reopen and some have other locations that will continue to serve, but a few are gone for good.

Here's a look at all the metro Phoenix restaurants and bars that closed in January 2024.

Badlands Bar & Grill

Kayla and Peter Lardakis, who opened Badlands Bar & Grill in 2021, posted their Tempe location closing on the restaurant's website. "Our Tempe Location has changed ownership and is permanently closed. Please look for our new location in Queen Creek to be open soon," it read.

BS West

BS West, one of the oldest gay bars in Scottsdale, announced its plan to close after 35 years in a Facebook post on Jan. 2.

"As we approach the end of an era, we wish to extend our deepest appreciation and best wishes to those who made our journey meaningful," read the post. "Thank you to the family of staff, show casts, partners and loyal patrons who helped us create a safe space and loving atmosphere over the years."

The bar's last day was Jan. 7.

Grand Avenue Pizza Company

In an Instagram post dated Jan. 31, owner Carson Wheeler wrote: "We’re turning the “Open” sign off one last time..." Wheeler sold his downtown Phoenix location in 2022 after nearly a decade. SnapBack Pizzeria replaced the restaurant. He then opened a second location in Glendale in March 2023.

In the post, Wheeler asked for support in his "newest endeavor: Fatherhood.

"I’ll be turning off the ovens, untying my flour-dusted apron, and using my rubber-soled non-slip kitchen shoes to walk into this next chapter in life with a full heart, determined to give this new adventure the attention it deserves and the work-life balance necessary to be present and enjoy every moment."

Little Anita's

Little Anita's New Mexican Food opened in Chandler in August 2022. The Chandler location is no longer listed on the website. The Phoenix location on Thomas Road and 15th Street remains open.

Parrish's

The family-owned restaurant and bar at the corner of Warner and South Mountain roads in Mesa closed its doors after four years.

Uncle Bear's Grill & Tap

Uncle Bear's Grill and Tap in Paradise Valley closed. Located at the corner of Tatum and Shea boulevards, this spot opened in 2021 and was one of six locations. The name came from the owners' beloved dog Bear. The chain is known for its Peanut Butter Cup Porter, massive burgers and dog-friendly theme. The north Scottsdale, Queen Creek, Gilbert and two Mesa locations remain open. Guests' dog photos will be transferred to the Scottsdale location.

Temporary closings

Burrito Shack

The 17-year-old family-owned burrito shop near Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport was closed after a county inspection in mid-January. In an Instagram post dated Jan. 14, co-owners Zeppelin Lucero and Johnny Grafing said "the current building has been shut down by the county for many (nonfood preparation) violations." The owners said they were looking for a new spot and requested donations to their GoFundMe.

La Belle Vie

In an Instagram post dated Jan. 26, the owner of La Belle Vie said he was closing the bakery until further notice "due to unexpected personal circumstances affecting our family." He thanked his followers "for all the nice messages I have received, unfortunately unless you have a private jet and a medical crew available for us (who doesn't have that, right?), there is not much we can do at this point but pray for our family and we definitely appreciate all your efforts in that direction."
