A reboot of The Office is a “goal” for NBC’s new streaming service Peacock

Today, NBCUniversal formally announced its new premium streaming service, Peacock, with an initial offering of programming that includes reboots of Saved By the Bell and Battlestar Galactic, as well as an extensive archival catalog of highlighted by The Office. After paying upwards of $500 million, Dundler Mifflin will call Peacock home starting in 2021.

And if NBC has its way, fans will be binging more than just old episodes of The Office. Speaking to Deadline, NBCU’s Bonnie Hammer, Chairman of Direct-to-Consumer and Digital Enterprises, confirmed the network’s intention to eventually reboot the show.

“It is my hope and goal that we do an Office reboot,” Hammer revealed. “We are having conversations.”

Hammer added that such a reboot is part of the company’s strategy to have “some connective tissue to what we also have in the library.” She explained, “All of our choices, especially in the beginning, we are doing them strategically so they connect back to our legacy,”

This is not the first time NBCU has expressed an interest in rebooting The Office, which ran for nine seasons between 2005 and 2013. Back in 2017, it was reported that series creator Greg Daniels was working on a new iteration of the comedy with plans to feature a mix of old and new cast members.

Steve Carell is unlikely to return for the reboot, having dismissed the possibility on several occasions in recent years. In an interview late last year, the actor behind Michael Scott said, “Ultimately, I think it’s maybe best to leave well enough alone and just let it exist as what it was.”

The same cannot be said for Carell’s former cast mates, however; Jenna Fischer (Pam), Angela Kinsey (Angela), and Creed Bratton (Creed) have all expressed interest in reprising their respective characters.

For now, fans can enjoy a new Office-themed podcast launched by Fischer and Kinsey. Also on the horizon is a new project reuniting Daniels and Carell coming to Netflix and spoofing Trump’s Space Force.
