Michael Moore Calls for Urgency in Opposing Trump: ‘We’re Living The Handmaid’s Tale’ (Video)

Documentary filmmaker Michael Moore was fired up on Friday night’s “Real Time,” telling host Bill Maher that now is the time to stand together to stop the “madness” in the Trump administration, even comparing it to the dystopian world seen in “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

“We are living ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,'” Moore said. “This is a serious point. The best part of the show is the flashbacks, where she tries to figure out where was the point where it was too late. Where was the point that if we all just had risen up, just done something? But because it happens in little increments. That’s how fascism works.”

Moore is making the rounds this week talking about the state of affairs in Washington D.C. and to talk about his next film, “Fahrenheit 11/9,” which refers to the date in 2016 when Trump became the president-elect. He hopes the movie’s premiere several weeks before the November midterm elections (it hits theaters Sept. 21) will help “get millions of people out to the polls.”

“We’re going to bring Trump down,” he said.

“I am not going to participate in providing hope for people,” Moore said. “Anybody who is hanging on hope, that implies there’s no sense of urgency. This is not about somewhere over the rainbow. Optimism is very dangerous. It’s not about warm and fuzzy now.”

As Moore sees it, the first order of business is pushing the appointment for a Supreme Court judge until after the November election and then winning Democratic seats in Arizona, Nevada and Tennessee, which he says are all within reach. To drive home the point to those in D.C., Moore is ready to join a million other Americans to surround the United States Capitol in protest.
