Get ready for the Kieran Culkin Oscar campaign.

On Tuesday, Searchlight Pictures announced “A Real Pain” with Culkin and writer-director Jesse Eisenberg will debut on October 18. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and earned raves for the “Succession” star as well as the festival’s Waldo Salt screenwriting award for Eisenberg.

Here’s the logline for the feature, provided by Searchlight:

Mismatched cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin) reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the odd-couple’s old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history.

Culkin has already been on an epic awards run this year, earning his first-ever Emmy Award in January for the final season of “Succession.” He was also awarded top honors at the Golden Globe Awards and Critics Choice Awards for playing Roman Roy on the HBO drama. (Culkin lost in his category at the Screen Actors Guild Awards but also took home a SAG Award as part of the “Succession” ensemble.) Buzz for his “A Real Pain” performance started almost immediately at Sundance, and he’s already been flagged as an early contender for the 2025 Oscars in the Best Supporting Actor category – although whether he ends up campaigning in the supporting field is unknown at present time. “A Real Pain” could also factor into the Best Original Screenplay race for Eisenberg, who himself could find some traction in the Best Actor field for his performance. With its October release date, it’s possible “A Real Pain” will ostensibly get relaunched by Searchlight Pictures during the fall festival season. Those lineups, however, won’t shake out until this summer.
