Ready to feel old? Some of this year’s MLB draft class were born in 2000

The Major League Baseball Draft is a good reminder of one’s mortality. As fans celebrate the future baseball stars of tomorrow, they also have to battle with the realization that these players are much, much younger than they realize.

If that thought depresses you, maybe stop reading now. We won’t judge you.

If you stuck around, then it’s time to meet St. Louis Cardinals first round pick Nolan Gorman. Gorman is a third baseman who was selected with the No. 19 pick in the draft … oh, and he was born in the year 2000.

That doesn’t seem right

No, it’s right. Players who were born in 2000 are now eligible for the MLB Draft. You don’t think 2000 happened that long ago, but that’s because you’re old now. Sorry you had to hear it from us.

OK, well that’s worrisome

Yeah, and it gets even worse. Gorman wasn’t the only first-round pick born in 2000. The Boston Red Sox drafted infielder Triston Casas with the No. 26 pick. Three picks later, the Cleveland Indians selected catcher Noah Naylor. All three were born in 2000.

Oh, and remember David Weathers? Well, his son was taken by the San Diego Padres with the No. 7 pick. Ryan Weathers was born in 1999, but maybe that makes it worse. It feels like David Weathers was still in the majors yesterday.

I’m definitely not freaking out about that

That’s good. You’re handling this well.

Now take a look at this list of things that happened before Gorman, Casas and Naylor were born:

• The first Matrix movie was already out
• “Friends” had already been on the air for six seasons
• The Backstreet Boys and N’Sync were two of the hottest bands in America
• Carlos Beltran just won the Rookie of the Year award
• Gas was around $1.22 a gallon
• Napster had just started
• Bartolo Colón was 26

Well, this is alarming

Yep.
