Ray Lewis and Lawrence Taylor are now co-owners of a World Jai-Alai League franchise. Sportico reports that the two NFL Hall of Famers teamed up to run the Wall Warriors. The duo will begin their new operations during the league’s next season, beginning with the 2024 WJAL Draft in February. The former Baltimore Ravens linebacker spoke about the new endeavor via email. The ex-athlete talked about WJAL’s rise in popularity in Florida and hopes to shape the sport’s future.

“Getting into the league this year has been a wild ride, and I’m itching to dive in and lead our brand-new squad to the championship alongside the legendary LT. The World Jai-Alai League is on fire right now, and we’re riding that wave of growth with pure excitement for what lies ahead in the world of jai-alai. It’s not just about games; it’s about the thrill of competition, the camaraderie, and shaping the future of this sport we love,” Lewis told the outlet.

Lawrence also opened up about his role in the operation. He called his new ownership role a “fresh challenge.” The former Giants star also got candid about his ambitions in turning the Warriors into WJAL champions.

“I never imagined owning a Jai-Alai team, but spending time at the fronton has motivated me to take the leap from being a fan to leading our team to a championship,” the legendary linebacker explained. “Along with Ray, I look forward to embracing a fresh challenge, bonding with our team, and leaving our mark in the Jai-Alai world. I’ve always been driven by competition, and being part of the league is a whole new level.”

The league’s chief operating officer, Scott Savin, also added some words about the excitement surrounding the league. “We’re seeing a lot of people sitting up and take taking notice of us,” Savin said “We’re very proud of what we’ve done, and where we think we’re going.”

WJAL is currently in its second season. The interesting sport began in Spain’s Basque region and was first played in the 14th century. During the 1980s, the sport experienced a boom in Florida and Connecticut. Now, the sport has returned to America with the WJAL.

The league currently has five teams—all of which are based in Miami. These teams include the Warriors, the Rebote Renegades, Cesta Cyclones, Dejada Devils, and the Lifestyle Miami Chargers. The 2023 WJAL season ends on Friday (Dec. 15), with the Cyclones waiting for their opponent in the championship.
