If you thought that an ’80s hair band and a ’60s Motown icon were two things that don’t have much (if anything) in common, you’d be right — for the most part. Metal and classic soul are genres that have historically tended to stay separate from each other. However, a surprising new mashup that’s popped up on YouTube is refuting that little-argued principle.
The track, titled “I Heard it Round and Round the Grapevine,” layers Marvin Gaye’s 1968 hit “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” over Ratt’s 1984 hard rocker “Round and Round.” There’s no particular way to explain the fact that the two songs meld together perfectly — don’t take our word for it, listen for yourselves — it just seems to be one of those crazy, magical things that happen. And we’re just about to lose our minds, honey honey. Yeah!
“I Heard it Round and Round the Grapevine” was uploaded to YouTube by a user named Bill McClintock on Feb. 20; as of posting time it has more than 15,000 views. McClintock offers up a variety of other interesting mashups for music fans to marvel at, including a groovy mix of Gwen Stefani with the Bee Gees, and an odd but undeniably flowing combo of Motley Crue with Steely Dan.
