Tepid reviews, be damned: Viewership for CBS’ telecast of the 2024 Golden Globes on Sunday (full winners list here) surged year-over-year.

Despite host Jo Koy receiving widespread pans for his hosting performance (TVLine readers gave the comic a rare “F” grade), the three-hour ceremony — benefitting from its NFL doubleheader lead-in — drew 9.4 million viewers. That’s a 50 percent increase vs. 2023, marking the Globes’ largest audience in four years.

Last year’s Jerrod Carmichael-hosted telecast on NBC averaged 6.3 million total viewers and a 1.1 demo rating, down 9 and 27 percent from the 2021 broadcast to mark the event’s smallest audience since 1995 (the last time that TBS hosted the show before turning it over to NBC) and a new demo low.

The 2021 Globes, with 6.9 million total viewers and a 1.5 demo rating, was down more than 60 percent from the last pre-pandemic ceremony. That January 2020, pre-pandemic Globes, hosted by Ricky Gervais, drew 18.4 million viewers.

“That’s a tough gig, I’m not going to lie,” Koy said Monday in response to his poorly received Globes performance. “I love the art of stand up. It was cool the opportunity came to me, but hosting is just a beast.”

Succession, BEEF and The Bear dominated the 81st annual ceremony on the TV side, winning multiple awards apiece including Best Drama Series, Best Limited Series and Best Comedy Series, respectively.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer reigned supreme on the film side of things, winning five awards including for Best Male Actor, Male Supporting Actor, Director, Original Score and Motion Picture Drama. Behind it with two wins each were The Holdovers (which won for Male Actor and Female Supporting Actor), Poor ThingsBarbie and Anatomy of a Fall.
