‘Ratched’ Canceled After One Season At Netflix; Sarah Paulson Confirms No Season 2

After four years, what has long been suspected, has been confirmed. Despite an initial two-season order, Ratched, Ryan Murphy’s asylum drama series starring Sarah Paulson in the title role, has been canceled after one season at Netflix. Paulson confirmed the news in a video posted to a fan account on X (fka Twitter). You can watch it below.

Inspired by the diabolical Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Ratched, from Murphy and Ian Brennan and executive produced by the film’s producer Michael Douglas, was set in mid-20th century Northern California. It centered around Mildred Ratched (Paulson), who lands a job at a psychiatric hospital as a nurse. The series followed the nurse’s first days navigating the mental healthcare system and her journey to head nurse in Ken Kesey’s 1962 novel.

The origin story, created by Evan Romansky, also starred Sharon Stone, Cynthia Nixon, Finn Wittrock, Jon Jon Briones, Charlie Carver, Judy Davis, Harriet Harris, Hunter Parrish, Amanda Plummer, Corey Stoll, Sophie Okonedo and Vincent D’Onofrio.

Douglas executive produced the series alongside Murphy, Brennan, Paulson, Alexis Martin Woodall, Aleen Keshishian, Jacob Epstein, Jennifer Salt, Margaret Riley, Robert Mitas and Tim Minear.

Ratched received a two-season straight-to-series order in 2017 and launched its eight-episode first season in September 2020. The series received four Emmy nominations during its run, including guest actress in a drama series for Sophie Okonedo as Charlotte Wells, as well as Period Costumes, Period and/or Character Hairstyling and Period and/or Character Makeup.
