Raptors sign general manager Bobby Webster to multi-year deal

The Toronto Raptors have signed general manager Bobby Webster to a multi-year extension, the team announced Thursday. Terms of his contract were not announced, per team policy.

Webster joined the Raptors in 2013 as Masai Ujiri’s right-hand man. He was promoted to general manager in 2017 and was influential in constructing the Raptors’ championship team in 2019, most notably on the Kawhi Leonard trade. His previous contract was set to end in 2021 but this gives the Raptors permanency in leadership, as head coach Nick Nurse was also signed to a long-term deal last offseason.

“I think everyone knows what Bobby brings to our organization: intelligence, poise, and creativity,” Raptors president Masai Ujiri said in a statement. “I’m very pleased that our team will continue to benefit from his many skills for seasons to come.”

This leaves Ujiri as the lone remaining question mark in the front office, as his future remains unclear beyond this season. Ujiri is expected to continue having conversations with ownership on his future, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. However, there are no shortage of suitors for Ujiri’s talents as the Washington Wizards have become the most recent team to be linked with the former Executive of the Year.

If Ujiri were to decide on a new challenge, the Raptors would be in still be in good hands. Webster is widely considered one of the brightest young executives in the league, and he will inevitably come to control a team, whether it’s in Toronto or elsewhere.

“It’s great to be able to continue the work of building the next Raptor championship team – a goal which is part of our organizational DNA,” Webster said. “I’m grateful to Larry Tanenbaum, MLSE ownership and leadership, our great players and staff, and the people of Toronto for making this my home for the past years, and for the future.”
