Rapsody has unleashed her latest single “Asteroids,” which arrives in anticipation of her forthcoming studio album. The LP will be her first in over four years.

Produced by Hit-Boy, the record finds the North Carolina native dropping thoughtful lyrics atop a jittery, albeit quaint, backdrop, tinged with brash appraisals of the Hip-Hop landscape and her personal evolution.

“First name Marlanna, last name Evans/ Underappreciated, but I’m still the most respected/ My insecurity is the fear of being rejected/ When you this raw they listen with an erection,” she raps on the opening verse, mixing introspect with wry wit in seamless fashion.

Rapsody recently announced the completion of her fourth studio album in a celebratory post on Instagram, where she teased her mind-state ahead of the release of the anticipated project. “The hardest step she ever took was to blindly trust in who she was,” she captioned the post, which included a brief visual featuring vocals by Darin Michelle and directed by aodream.

The acclaimed lyricist’s previous album, Eve, was released in August 2019 via Jamla/Roc Nation. The album included features from Queen Latifah, J. Cole, D’Angelo, JID, GZA, PJ Morton, Sir, Elle Varner, and more. In 2022, the Grammy Award-nominated rapper spoke with VIBE about the reasoning behind the long delay between her forthcoming album and the last, attributing the wait to the COVID pandemic and wanting to present a well-crafted body of work.

“I mean, several reasons,” she said at the time. “One, as an artist, when you’re creating something that means something to you, there’s no need to rush it. It’s gotta feel right, so I took my time with this to grow, to figure out what I wanted to talk about. The pandemic definitely had a part in it. It was a little bit harder to create that first year when we were all isolated. You know, you can’t just go and pop up at a studio and work with somebody like you want to.”

“But I think that time was needed. It was needed for me, anyway, just to sit still and regroup and relearn myself and just figure out where I wanted to go next. So, I don’t call it a hiatus, I’ve just been in a process of growing and creating and sometimes that takes time. That’s all. But I hope that it won’t be too much longer [and] when the music comes that people can hear the growth and appreciate the time that it took to make it.”
