Rapper Nipsey Hussle Killed in Los Angeles Shooting: Reports

Rapper Nipsey Hussle died in a shooting on Sunday, according to multiple reports. He was 33.

The “Hussle & Motivate” musician (né Ermias Asghedom) died after being shot on the street where his clothing store, the Marathon Clothing Company, is located in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, NBC News, the Los Angeles Times and TMZ reported, citing multiple law enforcement sources.

Two other victims were involved in the shooting, authorities say.

“Right around 3:20 this afternoon, there was a shooting that occurred at the 3400 block of West Slauson Avenue,” a public information officer with the Los Angeles Police Department tells PEOPLE. “Three individuals, three victims were shot. They were taken to a local hospital. One of those victims died at the local hospital, the other two are listed in stable condition.”

The PIO added: “The subject responsible for the shooting fled in some type of vehicle, but I do not have the information of the type of vehicle he fled in.”

The officer said that the South Bureau Homicide team is investigating the incident.

Just hours before the shooting, Nipsey Hussle tweeted, “Having strong enemies is a blessing.”

Nipsey Hussle — who grew up in Los Angeles — was believed to have ties to the Crips gang, of which he spoke in a 2010 interview with Complex, NBC News notes.

Over the years, Nipsey Hussle has dropped several mixtapes and worked with JAY-Z. Victory Lap, which is both his debut album and his last album to be released during his lifetime, was nominated for best rap album at the Grammy Awards in February.

“I’ve gotten it from young artists and young hustlers, like, ‘Nip man, I was really inspired by this move you did and I got my own version of that, me and my team,'” he told Complex in February. “That’s what it’s about. Adding something to the game that people can take from.”

“More than a lot of the things that we considered a success,” he continued. “I know in my heart that it’s a higher power and a higher value to what we can do. The times we do it right and it connects and it has that effect on people; that’s really, really fulfilling.”

Nipsey Hussle is survived by his two children: daughter Emani from a previous relationship and son Kross, 2, with his girlfriend, actress Lauren London, 34.

As news of his death spread on social media Sunday, several stars paid tribute to Nipsey Hussle — including Rihanna.

“This doesn’t make any sense!” she tweeted. “My spirit is shaken by this! Dear God may His spirit Rest In Peace and May You grant divine comfort to all his loved ones! ]]>💔🙏🏿🙏🏽🙏🏽
