Some might consider the 27-year-old Doja Cat — born Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini — something of an accidental star. An internet meme about the native Californian went viral in the wake of her humorous 2018 single "Mooo!," in which she asserts that she is a cow. The song contains pop culture references and lyrics from popular songs altered to fit the bovine theme. The song and accompanying video blew up the internet, garnering more than 1 million views in less than a week.

Interestingly, Doja Cat's first major hit also owes a debt of gratitude to internet fans. "Say So," which features a dance that went viral on TikTok, went on to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2020,

Since then, several singles have made the Top 10 songs in the Hot 100 including "Woman," "Vegas" "Need to Know," and "Kiss Me More," featuring SZA. Her collaborations with other artists like The Weeknd, Saweetie, Ariana Grande, and Post Malone also have charted.

Like Doja Cat, supporting act Ice Spice (real name Isis Gaston) also rose to prominence courtesy of TikTok, where her song "Munch (Feelin' U)" achieved viral popularity last year.

Three of her remix singles — "Princess Diana" (with Nicki Minaj), "Boy's a Liar Pt. 2" (with PinkPantheress), and "Karma" (with Taylor Swift) topped the Billboard Hot 100 at numbers 4, 3, and 2, respectively, making Ice Spice the artist with the most singles in the Top 5 of the Hot 100 so far this year.
