Every Friday, our new music feature Rap Song of the Week rounds up the hip-hop tracks you need to hear. Check out the full playlist here. This week, Key Glock remembers the late Young Dolph on “Proud.”

After Memphis icon Young Dolph was shot and killed last November, thoughts turned to his cousin and protégé Key Glock, who stayed silent for a week before revealing on Instagram that he was struggling with the death of his mentor and frequent collaborator, who he called the Phil Jackson to his Michael Jordan. A few months later, the 24-year-old rapper appears to have picked up the pieces.

Today (January 21st), Dolph’s label, Paper Route Empire, has released a tribute album titled Long Live Dolph, which features “Proud,” Key Glock’s tribute to Dolph. Over menacing trap production from BandPlay, Key Glock comes to terms with the loss, weaving in and out of the beat with his unrelenting flow. Offering a look into his recent state of mind, Key Glock opens the track by rapping, “I lost my dog, I lost my mind, no lie, I’m really lost inside/ I can get it back in blood, but still, I can’t get back the time.”

Knowing there’s no other option but to move forward, Key Glock promises to hold it down on P.R.E. for Dolph, despite being haunted by fantasies of revenge. Like anyone else in his position, Key Glock’s gotten caught up in self-medication (“I been tryna drink the pain away, sippin’ line after line”), but also considers what his late aunt would think of how he’s dealing with the pain.

Resolved to keeping Dolph’s name alive, Key Glock knows he has to continue the P.R.E. legacy through music, and “Proud” is just the start. With the consistency Key Glock’s shown on projects like the recently released Yellow Tape 2, there’s no doubt he has what it takes.

Honorable Mentions:

Big K.R.I.T. – “So Cool”

Recently focused on bringing his classic mixtapes to streaming services, blog era stalwart Big K.R.I.T. has shared the welcome news that his first new album since 2019 is “officially turned in.” Fortunately for fans, he soon followed up with the release of the laidback “So Cool,” and it would appear the project is coming sooner rather than later.

Guapdad 4000 – “I Need Bands”

Flipping LL Cool J’s “I Need Love” into an ode to getting money is on-brand for Guapdad 4000, who seemingly went from a rising scam rapper to working with Dreamville overnight. The talented Bay Area native hasn’t forgotten the grind, however, remembering how he had to create his own lane to make it in the industry.

Young T & Bugsey – “Glitter Ain’t Gold”

Rap duo Young T & Bugsey were already established in the UK before crossing over thanks to “Don’t Rush,” which went viral in 2020 due to a TikTok challenge. Taking their time to take advantage of the momentum, the group dropped their sophomore project Truth Be Told today. “Glitter Ain’t Gold” shows off Young T & Bugsey’s talent for melody while offering up a positive message.

Isaac Zale feat. Mick Jenkins and Blu – “Somebody Dies”

Ahead of his upcoming album, Father Of The Zodiac, Vancouver’s Isaac Zale has reunited with Consequence favorite Mick Jenkins and veteran LA rapper Blu. Featuring moody production from Dane Zabo, the track is a warning shot to anyone who thinks they can catch the trio slipping.

Internet Money feat. YoungBoy Never Broke Again – “Flossin'”

Having previously collaborated with NBA YoungBoy on The Kid LAROI’s “TRAGIC,” Internet Money’s first single of 2022 is a no-brainer reunion. Over twinkling keys and trap drums, the troubled young Louisiana rapper is as paranoid as ever, remembering a 2020 break-in while issuing his usual menacing threats.
