Every Friday, our new music column Rap Song of the Week breaks down the hip-hop tracks you need to hear. Check out the full playlist here. This week, Fivio Foreign teams up with Quavo for his new single “Magic City.”

Based on association alone, Fivio Foreign was tapped to be the next big star to emerge from the Brooklyn drill scene after Pop Smoke’s murder in February 2020. Those expectations were raised when Drake recruited Fivio for “Demons,” the Toronto rapper’s nod to the hip-hop subgenre, but it’s taken Fivio a few years to increase his profile further and ready his debut album.

Along the way, the East Flatbush native found a new mentor in Kanye West, impressing a whole new fanbase with a show-stopping appearance on the Donda cut “Off the Grid.” Last month, Fivio reunited with Kanye for the New York City anthem “City of Gods,” and now he’s back with “Magic City,” the latest ode to the Atlanta strip club. Naturally, Quavo is along for the ride to pay tribute to his hometown institution.

Produced by UK and Brooklyn drill innovator AXL Beats, “Magic City” hits all the right beats (no pun intended) for a stripper anthem. In addition to an apparent Three 6 Mafia reference (“Ass and titties, like hundreds and fifties”), Fivio’s “bow bow bow” adlibs and animated flow mesh nicely with an invigorated feature from Quavo.

Without Pop Smoke’s gravelly voice and universal appeal, becoming a superstar was never going to be an easy road for Fivio Foreign, and there’s no guarantee his upcoming album B.I.B.L.E. will bring him to that level. If Fivio’s able to balance the lyrical ability demonstrated on “Off the Grid” with the energy of “Magic City,” however, then there’s not much more that can be asked of him.

Honorable Mentions:

Nigo and Lil Uzi Vert – “Heavy”

All the singles so far from A Bathing Ape founder Nigo’s compilation album have sounded like what you’d expect from the featured artist (see: Pusha T on “Hear Me Clearly”), but the Lil Uzi Vert-assisted “Heavy” bucks that trend. On the track, the Philadelphia native demonstrates his adaptability by navigating a drill beat without ever sounding forced.

Leikeli47 – “LL Cool J”

South Central rapper Leikeli47’s latest Shape Up single, which stands for “Ladies Love Cool Jewelry,” features a sparse, booming beat reminiscent of its namesake’s early work. However, the track is unmistakably 47’s own, with a catchy chorus and brash rhymes turning men into her playthings: “To you silly hoes out here still tryna linger/ You can’t find him, ’cause I got him wrapped around my finger.”

Tha God Fahim – “4 Matic”

Prolific as ever, Tha God Fahim is dropping a new album titled Six Ring Champ next week. The soulful lead single “4 Matic” is a concise lyrical exercise, as the Atlanta rapper delivers street wisdom (“Know what you dealin’ with, ’cause it can all be a scandal/ You take that gamble and get lit up like candles”) and motivational rhymes about rising above unfavorable circumstances.

Wovvoka – “100%”

Signed to Donald Glover’s Wolf + Rothstein imprint, Illinois rapper Wovvoka cites James Brown and M83 as her biggest influences. Although “100%” is raw and full of aggression, it actually turns down the volume a notch from her previous single “GANG!!!” More importantly, Wovvoka lets some humor sneak through: “Other kids was like playing with Legos/ Me? Tryna’ make money outta’ Playdoh.”

Snøw – “Helpless”

One of the more successful artists to come out of the TikTok lo-fi scene, Snøw channels artists like the late Juice WRLD and Lil Peep on “Helpless,” opening up about the kind of heartbreak that leads to the downward spiral of self-medication. Hopefully, the aforementioned artists’ deaths have inspired fans to heed Snøw’s warning: “Weed and perks/ They don’t help at all with the coping.”
