Rap Song of the Week: Eva B’s “Rozi” Is a Banger Without Borders

Rap Song of the Week is a Friday round-up of the hip-hop tracks you need to hear. Check out the full playlist here. Today, we highlight Pakastani rapper Eva B’s “Rozi,” which was featured in the premiere episode of Ms. Marvel.

In music you can fake almost anything except urgency. Anger comes naturally, longing is as easy as yawning, but real urgency — a desperate need to get these thoughts out now — is so special it transcends language. “Rozi” may be rapped in Urdu, but its message resonates equally in English; a banger without borders.

Eva B — not her real name — has been called Pakistan’s first female rapper, and the decision to keep her face and identity hidden has as much to do with safety as religious practice. “Lonely difficult times to cut alone,” she spits in a translation provided by her team, “I am woman in house but I work like a man outside/ I’ve been subjected to criticism all the time/ Keeping strong I hide every pain.”

The song provides a thunderous soundtrack to Disney+’s latest MCU series, Ms. Marvel, which follows a Muslim girl living in New Jersey. But with a beat inspired by South Asian music seasoned with a dash of South LA, and lyrics that demand respect from oppressors, “Rozi” will make anyone feel like a superhero.

Honorable Mentions:

Big Jade feat. Peso Peso – “Pesos”

On “Pesos,” Big Jade and fellow Texas rapper Peso Peso body an anthemic horn-driven beat. Seemingly without stopping to take a breath, Jade brashly spits about holding haters at bay with a Draco and stunting so hard she’s not worried about losing a stack or two. Peso Peso follows up with a more gravelly flow, capping off the track in style. — Eddie Fu

Mike Dimes feat. J.I.D – “Home (Remix)”

Originating from an Instagram DM exchange, “Home (Remix)” puts a nice twist on the original by contrasting J.I.D’s nimble delivery with Dimes’ more deliberate flow. As expected, the Dreamville rapper elevates the track with clever references to Star Wars, Marvel Comics, and the Olsen twins — all the while elaborating on his love for Atlanta. — E.F.

Rubi Rose – “Wifey”

After rising to fame as a music video model, Rubi Rose is quickly coming into her own as a rapper, and “Wifey” is just the latest example. Rose nonchalantly puts in work over a sample of N.E.R.D.’s “Lapdance” — no easy task — while flipping the narrative on her haters. “‘Rubi a ho,’ that’s cap, bitch, I’m wifey,” she spits. “Second thought, bitch, I might be.” — E.F.

Saucy Santana feat. Latto – “Booty”

Florida rapper Saucy Santana receives a big co-sign from Latto on the sure-to-be viral club track “Booty,” which shares a sample with Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love.” Nevertheless, the song stands on its own with memorable one-liners from both Saucy (“He on PornHub, searchin’ booties like this”) and Latto (“Hit it from the back, makin’ beats like Tay Keith”). — E.F.

Tony Shhnow – “Forgive Don’t Forget”

With “Forgive Don’t Forget,” Tony Shhnow passes down an important lesson about trust. While he still wishes success for people who weren’t there when times were rough, the Atlanta rhymer has a valuable reminder: “Guard your brain and protect your neck/ If one day they may return, don’t forget how they left.” Wise words to live by. — E.F.
