Previously on The Opus: Cypress Hillwe dove into the inner workings of the rap group’s unmatched chemistry. This week, we take a look at the other half of their unmistakable sound: the unique alchemy of their beats.

Cypress Hill took from rock and metal as much as they did the pantheon of hip-hop. The roots run deep, as Sen Dog’s first concert was legendary thrash metal outfit Slayer (drummer Dave Lombardo was a long-time high school friend). Fusing that background with the sounds and beats of hip-hop, the group stumbled across a mix that would go on to define the next several decades of genre-fusing sonic exploration. (Sometimes for better or worse, as we cover in our exploration of rap-rock’s highs and lows.)

Join host Jill Hopkins — as well as Sen Dog, Public Enemy’s Chuck D, and more — as she dives into Cypress Hill’s unique approach to the craft of beat-making, their genre play, and more on this episode of The Opus: Cypress Hill. Then, for another another look into the sonic interests of Cypress Hill, check out the 10 hip-hop albums Sen Dog thinks you should own, which you can also hear him discuss on the Consequence UNCUT podcast.

Stay tuned for our final The Opus archives release later this week, as we’ll wrap up our look at the cultural smash that was Cypress Hill. You can also check out our exclusive Hip-Hop 50 and The Opus merch over at the Consequence Shop, or grab yours using the buy-now buttons below.
