Never say the Candyman's name five times in front of a mirror, never say "I'll be right back," and never ring the bell at Bell Lake.

In the new horror movie The Bell Keeper (out Oct. 13), a team of documentary filmmakers investigate an urban myth about a supernatural killer. As the lore goes, explains director Colton Tran, "If you go to Bell Lake, and you ring the bell, this guy, Hank, will just come out and murder everyone."

Of course, the documentarians do ring the bell and all hell breaks loose, literally. "They summon Hank and it's got a good twist on the story," says executive producer Jeffrey Reddick, the creator of the Final Destination franchise. "It doesn't play out like you think it's going to play out."

The actors depicting the movie's documentarians include Days of Our Lives star Mike Manning, who costarred with actor-turned-filmmaker Tran in the 2014 Disney movie Cloud 9 and was the person who approached him about directing The Bell Keeper, which you can see an exclusive clip from above. Tran says after they wrapped Cloud 9, he and Manning "stayed really good friends. Mike was like, 'Hey, this movie already has distribution, it's funded, they just need a director that can pull this off.' Two months later, we were in production."

The film's cast also includes Chaz Bono, Bonnie Aarons from The Nun movies, and UFC legend Randy Couture, who plays the murderous Hank. "He's this big hulking guy, but he's so sweet — he's just this teddy bear of a human being," says Tran of Couture, a veteran of The Expendables franchise. "Sometimes I'd have to remind him, 'We need to beef this up in a way where people are afraid of you,' because his normal self is not intimidating."

Reddick tells EW that he leant his name, and experience, to the project because of the twisty nature of the script by Joe Davison and Luke Genton, and the enthusiasm of the horror-loving Tran.

"Colton is so creative and so passionate about the genre, which is something that is important to me," says the executive producer. "Colton reminds me of a younger me, even though I'm not that much older than him."

Tran — who also directed the thriller Sorry, Charlie, which debuted last weekend on Tubi — is currently developing his next feature, Sketch, a mix of live-action and animation, which is produced by Reddick and NSYNC member Lance Bass.

"It's basically like Who Framed Roger Rabbit but a horror film," says the director. "Lance loves horror, and loves Halloween, and he just gets the vision and supports it so much."

For now, he's introducing audiences to The Bell Keeper, which costars Kathleen Kenny and Reid Miller, and opens Oct. 13 in theaters and on demand.
