Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at the 2024 NFL Honors at Resorts World Theater in Las Vegas on Thursday, the proud mom, 48, shared how she is giving the 28-year-old quarterback his “space” in the run-up to his fourth Super Bowl appearance on Sunday.

“I give him a lot of space, but there are moments whether I'm laying in bed late at night or I have a moment where I text him,” Randi tells PEOPLE. “We don't talk as much because he's busy, and so today he texts me when I let him know that we landed and what we were doing and he's like, ‘Love you mom,’ and you know we just kind of keep our connection. But right now I'm letting him have his moment.”

The Kansas City Chiefs star has been busy preparing for Super Bowl 2024 against the San Francisco 49ers, with his team training at the Las Vegas Raiders’ facility in the city.

The game — a rematch of the 2020 Super Bowl, which the Chiefs won 31-20 in Miami — is set to take place at Allegiant Stadium on Feb. 11 with Usher headlining the Apple Music Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show.

In a separate interview with PEOPLE earlier this week, Randi reflected on raising Patrick and how becoming his mother "changed" her into "a whole new person."

"Patrick is my first child, and I grew up with him basically," Randi told PEOPLE. "I had him at a young age, and I don't go out saying that's the best thing to do, but it was the best thing for me just because it made me grow up."

The mother-of-three discovered she was pregnant with Patrick in 1995 at the age of 20. "Sometimes, I look back and I'm like, 'Where would I be if I didn't have him?' Because I wasn't going down a bad road, I just wasn't going on a road," she added.

Randi also shared how the sportsman became her “little best friend,” after he was born. "I had someone that needed me," she said. "We were together 24/7, and I learned with him."

"He made me grow up in a good way, in a great way,” she continued. “Being a mother is my favorite thing sometimes, and sometimes it's hard, but it is my favorite thing, and I always say, 'Where would I be without it?' ”

Randi shares Patrick and Jackson Mahomes, 23, with ex-husband Pat Mahomes Sr, who was an MLB pitcher in the late 1990s and early 2000s. She is also mom to Mia Randall, 12, from a previous relationship.
