When it comes to Halloween, few people do it up — and do it as well — as Rande Gerber, the co-founder of Casamigos Tequila and host of the annual Casamigos Halloween Party. Previous editions of the costume party have drawn stars as varied as Dave Grohl, Harry Styles, Trevor Noah and Megan Fox, not to mention Casamigos’ other co-founder George Clooney, and this year’s edition — taking place in Los Angeles Friday — promises to once-again be a celeb-filled affair.

This year’s event also comes on the heels of Casamigos’ latest expression, a Cristalino Reposado bottling that was released earlier this year. Made from the same 100% Blue Weber agave as its signature tequila, the Cristalino is twice-distilled and aged in American white oak barrels, then charcoal-filtered to remove the golden coloring of the Reposado. The result: a unique, crystal-clear spirit that’s full of agave flavor while remaining crisp and smooth on the palette.
Rolling Stone caught up with Gerber ahead of the Casamigos Halloween bash to talk about what to expect at his legendary party, the secret to a good costume, and the songs and artists that are must-haves on his perfect party playlist.
Rolling Stone: Where did the idea to throw a Halloween party come from and what do you love about this holiday?
Gerber: Just like our tequila, we wanted to do an annual Casamigos Halloween party to enjoy and celebrate good times and fun with our house of friends. Typically, Halloween is a time to let loose and be someone else — and a little Casamigos seems to always help people lose one’s inhibitions.
What’s the secret to a good Halloween costume?
My wife Cindy [Crawford] and I go all out for Halloween. It’s the one night where you can transform into someone else – at least on the outside.
What’s the secret to choosing a good Halloween party playlist?
For each party, I like to curate a special Casamigos playlist. It usually starts off pretty mellow earlier in the night, so the music is conducive for socializing. As the night goes on and the party picks up, we turn it up and play some old school dance mixes as well as some new favorites. The music changes throughout the night, from mellow R&B, to country, to hip-hop and dance.
