‘Rambo: Last Blood’ Trailer: Stallone’s Past and Present Merge Into One

After saying goodbye to Rocky in the “Creed” films, Sylvester Stallone is finally fulfilling years of promises to give John Rambo his swan song with “Rambo: Last Blood,” which got a new trailer from Lionsgate on Tuesday.

The plot is one that isn’t too different from what fans of the bloody mercenary are used to. Rambo now lives a quiet life on a farm near the Mexican border, only to have that life turned upside down when the daughter of one of his closest friends (Yvette Monreal) is kidnapped by a Mexican cartel. The trailer shows Rambo doing what he does best: blow stuff up, bash skulls in, stab through rib cages, and fire lethal arrows from his infamous bow.

And amidst the action, we see sepia-toned shots of Rambo from his ripped, long-haired 80s heyday, sending another message that this is indeed the capstone on a five film series that marked Stallone’s transition from America’s favorite underdog to its most lethal cinematic killer. Not that we blame him — after all, they drew first blood, not him.

“Rambo: Last Blood” is directed by Adrian Grunberg from a script by Stallone and Matt Cirulnick. It hits theaters September 20. Watch the trailer above.
