Danny Boyle’s zombie franchise is getting a reboot with 28 Years Later, and Ralph Fiennes, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Jodie Comer have been added to the cast.

Per Deadline28 Years Later will be the first installment of a new trilogy, with original 28 Days Later director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland set to reprise their creative roles. The second film in the trilogy will be directed by Candyman’s Nia DaCosta, and both films will be shot back-to-back. Cillian Murphy, who starred in the original 28 Days Later, will return as an executive producer on 28 Years Later and has not ruled out an on-screen role in the film. The trilogy will be handled by Sony Pictures.

The original 28 Days Later film arrived in 2002 and followed the deadly outbreak of a virus that turned humans into zombies. A standalone sequel, 28 Weeks Later, was made in 2007 — Boyle and Garland were involved as executive producers, and the cast was separate, but the events of the film took place during the initial outbreak depicted in 28 Days Later.

Both Boyle and Murphy originally teased a sequel to 28 Days Later back in 2022, with Boyle saying that he’d be “very tempted” to return to the franchise. Danny Boyle’s last major project arrived in 2022 with the Sex Pistols miniseries, Pistol — Alex Garland, meanwhile, has been back in the spotlight this year with his new film, Civil War.
