The Office alum Rainn Wilson shares his thoughts about the upcoming Peacock spin-off series of the hit sitcom, saying that the creator’s decision to move away from Scranton made him “sad.”

After more than a decade since The Office wrapped up its successful run on NBC for nine seasons (complete with 201 episodes), it was previously announced that the mockumentary sitcom will be receiving a sequel series from Peacock. However, instead of Scranton, the series will be set in the Midwest.

“I don’t see how Dwight [Schrute] goes from Scranton to wherever they’re shooting it in the Midwest. But, you know, if Greg [Daniels] wants me to do something, I’m happy to do something. But, I am sad that they’re leaving Scranton,” Wilson told CinemaBlend.

He continued, “I understand that they’re why they’re leaving Scranton, but I kind of feel like there should be like seven different office spinoffs kind of like Law and Order. Like there’s Law and Order: SVU and Law and Order: Criminal Intent, and there should be all of these workplace documentaries going on, but they should all be in the Scranton Wilkes Bar, Lackawanna County, greater Metropolitan area.”

What to expect from The Office spin-off?

The new mockumentary comedy — which will take place in the same universe as NBC’s The Office — is expected to start production this July. Other details about the Peacock series remain under wraps, but the logline states that the series will “center around the quirky employees of a dying newspaper in the Midwestern United States. The publisher’s only shot at reviving the historic rag is by recruiting volunteer reporters.”

Created and executive produced by Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, The Office spin-off series will be led by Domhnall Gleeson (Alice & Jack) and Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus). The characters Gleeson and Impacciatore will portray are still being kept close to the vest.
