Radio Anchor Shot and Killed While Appearing on Live Facebook Stream from His Home Studio

Juan Jumalon was fatally shot inside his southern Philippine radio station on Sunday

A radio anchor was shot dead while appearing on a Facebook Live stream in the Philippines.

Juan Jumalon was fatally shot inside his home-based southern Philippine radio station on Sunday morning, according to a Facebook post from the Misamis Occidental Police.

The incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. local time in Calamba town while Jumalon was on air for 94.7 Calamba Gold FM and Facebook Live, according to authorities.

As reported by NBC News, the gunman gained entry into the broadcaster’s home by pretending to be a listener. He then shot him twice.

Police said Jumalon —  known as DJ Johnny Walker  — was shot in the face.

The gunman also stole a gold necklace from Jumalon, 57, before fleeing, according to The Washington Post. Per the publication, a video of the attack shows Jumalon sinking back in his chair after two gunshots are fired while music plays. The gunman’s face was not visible in the footage.

According to the Associated Press, the gunman fled with a companion who waited outside Jumalon’s house on a motorcycle. Jumalon was pronounced dead while being transported to the hospital following the incident.

The publication added that an investigation is underway to establish if the shooting was work-related.

On Monday, police released a sketch of one of the suspects in the shooting on Facebook and asked for the public’s help in the investigation

According to the authorities, the man is over the age of 40, of medium build and was last seen wearing a red cap with a green shirt and black short pants.

The fatal shooting of Jumalon was also condemned by President Bongbong Marcos.

“I condemn in the strongest terms the murder of broadcaster Juan Jumalon,” Marcos shared in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter). “I have instructed the PNP to conduct a thorough investigation to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice.”

"Attacks on journalists will not be tolerated in our democracy, and those who threaten the freedom of the press will face the full consequences of their actions.”
