Rachel Maddow Joins the Cast of ‘Batwoman’ on The CW

Rachel Maddow is joining Ruby Rose in the cast of “Batwoman” on The CW.

The MSNBC political commentator will play Vesper Fairchild, a Gotham television and radio personality who appears in the “Batman” comics. According to the network, Maddow will only lend her voice to Fairchild, with no current plans for her to appear in person.

“I know no one’s going to believe this is true, but it’s true,” Maddow tweeted Friday. “I’m ‘Vesper Fairchild’ in the new Batwoman TV show that starts this Sunday night on The CW. (My character is soooo not me; turns out playing her is one of the most fun things I’ve ever done).”

Maddow is no stranger to the story of “Batwoman,” which follows Kate Kane, a lesbian superhero who takes over as Gotham’s new Caped Crusader after her cousin Bruce Wayne disappears. Maddow previously wrote an introduction to the 2010 deluxe hardcover edition of a “Batwoman” graphic novel called “Elegy.”

Here is the CW’s official description of “Batwoman”: Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane (star Ruby Rose) soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”

Based on the characters from DC, “Batwoman” is written by Caroline Dries, who executive produces with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns, David Nutter, and director Marcos Siega. “Batwoman” is produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.
