Rachel Brosnahan Feels Like a 'Constant Disappointment' to 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' Fans

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan has two Golden Globes, two Critics’ Choice awards, a SAG award, and an Emmy under her belt — plus, Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for 2020 (and did we mention she’s 29?). Even so, Brosnahan feels like a “disappointment” to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel fans, and the reason why will (no surprise) make you laugh.
At a Q&A Tuesday, Brosnahan got candid about fan interactions, and what it feels like to look back on her success. As the lead in one of the hottest shows on television (Maisel has already been renewed for Season 4), you’d expect the actress to feel on top of the world — but she says interactions with fans help keep her ego in check.

“I’ve gone out in the world now and I’m a constant disappointment,” Brosnahan quipped to the crowd. “I have blond hair — I’m a natural blond — I don’t look like Midge really, and I’m not quite as …quick on my feet.”
To be fair, this isn’t just Brosnahan being hard on herself. She said a fan encounter confirmed her suspicions: “She got up to the front of the line and she just [stared]. And I was like, ‘Hello, it’s so nice to meet you,’ and she’s like, ‘You don’t look anything like Mrs. Maisel.'”
Brosnahan gamely tried to recover: “I go, ‘oh no, I wear a wig, we have great hairdressers.’ I was ready to gab about our hair, and she was just like, ‘You don’t look anything like Mrs. Maisel.’ I was like, ‘No, I’m an actor, I just act.’ And she was like, ‘You don’t sound like her either.'”

While fans may be hoping for someone more Midge-like, Brosnahan said she’s learned that trying to change herself is a losing game. When asked what advice she’d give her younger self, the Maisel star didn’t skip a beat.
“That none of it matters so much,” she began. “Early on, you get a lot of feedback on auditions, and people give it to you like it is the Bible, like it is the truth, and there’s no room for interpretation. I’ve been told so many times I have to change my hair and learn to do my makeup and buy different clothes and be more this and more that and it starts to get in your head.”
“I was told for so many years that I wasn’t funny,” the award-winning comedy actress continued. “I would spend money I did not have fixing my hair and makeup because I thought it would help me out…it’s not that serious. If the role is meant to be yours, it will be yours.”
In the case of Midge (and we’re sure all Maisel fans will agree), Brosnahan was meant to play that role.
