R. Kelly jailed for failing to pay child support

R. Kelly was taken back into custody by Chicago authorities Wednesday, EW has confirmed.

Hours after CBS aired the singer’s dramatic interview with Gayle King, he arrived at a closed court hearing in Chicago over his unpaid child support. Kelly, 52, owes more than $161,633 to his ex-wife, Andrea Kelly, who spoke about their marriage in the recent Lifetime documentary series Surviving R. Kelly.

A spokesperson for the Cook County Sheriff’s Office told EW that Kelly was taken into custody and was set to be transported to Cook County Jail hours later. His next court date is set for March 13, when he’ll need to pay the full amount of $161,633 in order to secure release.

Last month, Kelly turned himself in to Chicago authorities after being indicted on 10 charges of aggravated criminal sexual assault against four victims. The singer spent three nights in jail before posting the $100,000 bail bond. Kelly, who was acquitted of child pornography charges in 2008, has pleaded not guilty to the new charges. In his interview with King, Kelly said all his accusers are “absolutely” lying about him. “I have been assassinated,” he said. “I have been buried alive. But I’m alive.”

Kelly’s lawyer Steve Greenberg did not immediately respond to EW’s request for comment for this story.
