According to a press statement, the Trailblazer Award honors visionaries who are impacting our culture and affecting social change through their innovative storytelling. The inaugural Trailblazer Award was bestowed to Issa Rae in 2022.

Brunson’s honor is due to her success in the digital and entertainment industries, namely Abbott Elementary, the Peabody Award-winning series she created for ABC. Peabody describes Brunson’s work as the series’ showrunner as reflecting its mission to honor stories that matter and opening doors for the next generation of Black leaders in television.

Earlier this year, the Philadelphia native became the first Black woman to win the Best Comedic Actress Emmy Award in four decades for her starring role in the sitcom, Janine Teagues.
