Over the last nearly three decades, Quentin Tarantino has emerged as one of Hollywood’s boldest directors by making something new out of countless sources of inspiration and references across film history. He’s been helped greatly by three cinematographers: Andrzej Sekuła, Guillermo Navarro, and Robert Richardson. Together, these artists have created one of the most easily recognizable visual styles in film history. No wonder four Tarantino films have been nominated for Best Cinematography (“Inglourious Basterds,” “Django Unchained,” “The Hateful Eight,” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”). It’s more surprising all nine Tarantino films haven’t been nominated. From “Reservoir Dogs” to “Hollywood,” Tarantino’s cinematic eye remains unparalleled in the film industry.

“The goal isn’t just to make the movie that’s in my head, the movie that’s in my head is the starting point,” Tarantino once told IndieWire about nailing his visuals. “If we fail completely we get that, but that’s the launch pad. And then I bring great artists and craftsman together and then they expand on it and that’s the paint box. [Bob Richardson’s] led my films to a visual sophistication that, back when I was working at the video store, I couldn’t even dream of achieving myself, but I could appreciate in others.”
