The Queen's funeral TV coverage: Broadcasters reveal plans

The Queen's state funeral date has been announced as Monday, 19 September, with rolling coverage expected across all major broadcasters.

Many people are keen to pay their respects to the late monarch and those unable to make the journey to London to line the route to Westminster Abbey will have the chance to watch the live TV broadcast.

Plans are being announced for TV schedules day by day, with the most up-to-date information on planned coverage here.

BBC

TV

BBC One has a full day of funeral coverage, news bulletins and commemorative programmes lined up, beginning at 6am with BBC Breakfast.

The state funeral coverage will then run from 8am until 5pm on the channel, with coverage led by Huw Edwards, Kirsty Young, Fergal Keane, David Dimbleby and Sophie Raworth, as well as Anita Rani and JJ Chalmers reporting from the Long Walk and Wellington Barracks.

Another news bulletin is scheduled for 5pm, at 6.15pm The One Show will air special episode Our Queen Remembered, and there will then be a break in funeral coverage to air Paddington 2 at 6.50pm.

Viewers will return to a round-up of the day's events at 8.30pm and broadcasting finishes off with the news again from 10pm.

Over on BBC Two, the funeral coverage is expected to be replicated from BBC One, with a number of quiz shows including Richard Osman's House of Games, Unbeatable, University Challenge, Only Connect and Mastermind, taking over from 5.45pm.

Radio

Radio coverage will be simulcast on BBC Sounds, BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio Scotland between 9am and 1.30pm, and 2.30pm and 5pm.

The radio hosting team will include Martha Kearney, Allan Little, Jonny Dymond, Ken Bruce, Mishal Husain, Emma Barnett, Clive Myrie, Adele Roberts, Eleanor Oldroyd and Naga Munchetty.

BBC local radio will cover the funeral between 10am and 2pm, BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 3 will broadcast the state funeral service at 11am, and BBC Radio 3 will also broadcast the committal service at 4pm.

In Northern Ireland, BBC Radio Ulster will cover the funeral from 10.30am to 1.30pm and the committal service from 3pm to 6pm; in Wales, BBC Radio Cymru will cover the funeral from 10.15am to 1.15pm and later the committal service; and in Scotland, BBC Radio nan Gaidheal will cover the funeral from 10am and throughout the day.

BBC World Service English will broadcast the procession, the state funeral service and the committal service.

BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 1Xtra, BBC Asian Network and BBC Radio 6 Music will reflect the events of the day in their news coverage, with amended schedules and Radio 1 Dance and Radio 1 Relax will be simulcasting Radio 1 on Monday.

All live stations will observe the two minute silence during the funeral service.

Digital

The BBC is also launching a dedicated livestream of the Queen lying in state.

The service will be available globally on the BBC News website for those who want to pay their respects but are unable to travel to London or are physically unable to queue.

It will also be available in the UK on the iPlayer, BBC Parliament and the red button.

The livestream will be available from 5pm on Wednesday, when the doors of Westminster Hall are expected to open to the public.

ITV

Plans for Monday will begin with Good Morning Britain previewing the funeral before coverage of it begins, with the time of the service set for 11am.

From 9.30am, Tom Bradby and Julie Etchingham will host the state funeral coverage, with Mary Nightingale at Westminster Abbey, Royal Editor Chris Ship in London and Windsor, Rageh Omaar with the armed forces at Wellington Barracks, Nina Hossain on the Long Walk and Charlene White speaking to mourners in London.

It will be the largest outside broadcast in ITV’s history, with the event shown live and uninterrupted on ITV’s main channel and simultaneously on all of its digital channels.

"Uninterrupted" means that no adverts will be shown on any ITV channels on Monday.

A documentary chronicling the 10 days of national mourning, Queen Elizabeth II: A Nation Remembers, will air at 7.30pm followed by a special programme about the day's events at 9pm, and then an extended News at Ten.

This will be the first time the day's programming from 6am to midnight has been simulcast on ITV’s main channel, five digital channels and hub.

Channel 4

Channel 4 is offering a different take on Monday's broadcasting - it will not air the state funeral, but has changed its schedule to include royal-themed programming.

It will begin the day with a number of episodes from its Britain's Most Beautiful Landscapes series, heading into a double bill of Hugh Bonneville-fronted documentary Secrets of the Royal Gardens from 9.20am.

Jon Snow presents Her Majesty the Queen, a portrait of her life and reign, at 10.55am, followed by the two minute silence at 11.55am.

From 12pm, a digitally restored documentary of the Queen's 1953 coronation narrated by Sir Laurence Olivier will air.

Viewers can then see an extended news programme from 1.20pm and a showing of 1943 wartime musical We'll Meet Again at 2.50pm, followed by more Secrets of the Royal Gardens and UK travel documentaries in the afternoon, and a return to usual programming in the evening.

Channel 4 aired extended news programmes the day after the Queen's death, but went ahead with some scheduled shows, including the new series of Gogglebox and a special commemorative episode of Steph's Packed Lunch.

A statement from Channel 4 about airing Gogglebox on Friday read: “Channel 4 has made significant changes to our schedule, including added extended news coverage, to ensure that Channel 4 is respectful following the news from Buckingham Palace about the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

“Channel 4 exists to offer viewers an alternative and that is particularly important at times like this.

“Gogglebox is a much loved national institution and it will air as planned tonight bringing a valuable sense of continuity for many of our viewers.”

Sky

Sky will air its live coverage of the funeral throughout the day on Sky News, which will also be suspending advertising for the whole of Monday.

Coverage begins at 5am with Kay Burley who is live from Westminster Abbey to explain to viewers how the day will unfold, leading into reporting on the funeral procession from 9am and the state funeral service from 11am.

Anna Botting will be reporting live from Westminster and Dermot Murnaghan will take over at 2pm from Windsor Castle as the procession makes its way from Westminster Abbey to Wellington Arch, before concluding at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle via the Long Walk.

Sky royal events commentator Alastair Bruce will provide analysis of the historic events, while Kamali Melbourne and Gillian Taylor will be at Windsor Castle and in London speaking to the public who have turned out to pay their respects.

At 7pm Mark Austin will reflect on the day from Buckingham Palace, followed by a round-up show at 9pm and Anna Botting returning for the News at Ten from Buckingham Palace.

Global coverage

The Queen was respected across the world, with many other global leaders invited to her state funeral.

As an event of international significance, it will also be broadcast in many other countries, who have begun announcing their plans for coverage.

US news outlets CNN and NBC News will be covering the funeral live on Monday, as will Australian national broadcaster ABC and Canadian network CBC.
