It looks like the Duchess of Cambridge will be following in the footsteps of her royal grandmother-in-law in a very special way. On Tuesday, the royal family blog announced that Kate Middleton assumed Queen Elizabeth’s Royal Photographic Society patronage — a role Her Majesty the Queen has held for an incredible 67 years. Prior to that, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert also served as royal patrons of the organization in the year it was founded, 1853.

Per the announcement, Kate is a perfect fit for this particular patronage due to her longstanding interest in photography. This role “will further highlight the beneficial impact that art and creativity can have on emotional wellbeing, particularly for children and young children.” In fact, the announcement coincides with Kate’s upcoming visit to a photography workshop run by The Royal Photographic Society and Action for Children, the latter of which is another of Kate’s patronages.

Of Kate’s newly minted patronage, Mike Taylor — Chief Operating Office of the Royal Photographic Society — said, “It is a huge honor to have The Duchess as our Patron, especially given her personal interest in photography. We know that photography and creative pursuits have such a positive impact for people of all ages, and we are excited to be working with one of The Duchess’s charities in support of their work.”

Kate, who once dubbed herself an “enthusiastic amateur photographer” and who studied art history in college, undoubtedly enjoyed her first outing in her official capacity as the new patron (she was made an honorary member of The Royal Photographic Society in 2017). According to the royal family blog, the workshop covered “various elements of photography such as portraits, light and color.” It also aimed to provide a “universal language” to help young people hone their self-expression and build confidence.

So far, Kate’s photographic endeavors have been limited to the beautiful photos often shared of her three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. And, hey, we’re not complaining — we’re big fans of those gorgeous glimpses into the Cambridge family life. But who knows? Perhaps Kate’s new royal patronage will lead to her Royal Highness taking (and maybe even exhibiting in the name of a charity she supports) a broader scope of photographic subjects.
