It’s a sad day for Queen Elizabeth II, who’s currently quarantined in Windsor Castle with husband Prince Philip. On March 30, 2002 — 18 years ago today — the Queen’s mother died with her daughter by her side. Today, Queen Elizabeth remembers her mother’s death and honors her mother’s life and the legacy she left behind.
The Queen’s mother was born Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon and married the Queen’s father Prince Albert in 1923. The Queen Mother was the first British-born Queen Consort since the Tudor period, and was greatly beloved by her people, engaging in her royal duties as long as she could.

Due to current quarantine conditions, the Queen can’t be with the rest of her family to share their memories of her mother’s life today. But we hope the royal family has found a way to honor her life from afar, and let the Queen know that their hearts are with her.
