What are the holidays without a little family drama, really? However, the Queen is reportedly disappointed in Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for skipping out on her annual royal Christmas festivities in favor of a “small Christmas with just immediate family.” Despite the fact that Buckingham Palace issued an official statement insisting the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have “the support of Her Majesty the Queen,” it could be a front to hide the way the royal monarch really feels.

As confirmed in Buckingham Palace’s statement, Harry and Meghan intend to celebrate baby Archie’s first Christmas away from the rest of the royals. “Having spent the last two Christmases at Sandringham, [the couple] will spend the holiday this year, as a new family, with the duchess’ mother, Doria,” the statement read. And a source elaborated to Us Weekly, “As it’s Archie’s first Christmas, they want it to be super special. It’ll be just Doria and the three of them. The drama surrounding the couple has caused a huge amount of stress. They’re making their family their No. 1 priority right now.”

Unfortunately, claims the source, Queen Elizabeth is actually “disappointed” that Harry and Meghan won’t be attending her annual holiday celebration. But even if the Queen is disappointed, it isn’t necessarily a negative thing. It might simply mean that Harry’s grandmother is sad she won’t get to spend time with the couple and their adorable son. Guilt-tripping is definitely a go-to in the playbook of grandmas everywhere.

The Queen’s disappointment may also stem from the fact that Harry and William aren’t on the same page anymore. According to Us Weekly’s insider, the “rift” between the brothers “is one of the main reasons behind [Harry and Meghan’s] decision” to skip out on the traditional royal holiday festivities. William and wife Kate Middleton — along with kids Prince George, 6, Princess Charlotte, 4, and Prince Louis, 18 months — are expected to attend the Queen’s festivities, including opening presents with Her Majesty in Norfolk next month.

Besides, Harry and Meghan are following the precedent set by royal couples before them, including William and Kate. “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spent Christmas 2016 with her family in Berkshire, so what the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have planned for this Christmas is absolutely no different,” royal commentator Joe Little reminded Insider.
