The royal family always needs to stir up some controversy, and this bit of news should have everyone raising their eyebrows. Queen Camilla’s son, Tom Parker-Bowles, is capitalizing on his mother’s royal role with a new cookbook that will be available later this year.

Cooking and The Crown: Royal Recipes from Queen Victoria to King Charles III won’t be out until Sept. 26, 2024, but Parker-Bowles certainly isn’t shying away from his mother’s marriage to the monarch, who also just happens to be his godfather. According to The Bookseller, the recipe book will “feature more than 100 recipes, including everything from breakfasts, picnic lunches, and dinners, to recipes for coronations and state banquets.” The site also noted that there will be “stories about the chefs, customs, and predilections of royal kitchens.” Does that mean King Charles might contribute an anecdote or two?

Parker-Bowles also shared some insight about his upcoming publication and how his royal-adjacent status seemed to have gotten him some serious insider access. “As a food history geek, I cannot tell you how exciting it has been to write this book. To read original recipes in the royal archive in Windsor and disappear into the lives and reigns (and eating habits) of sovereigns from Queen Victoria onwards,” he told the outlet. “But this is not about roast cygnet, ortolans, and snipe stuffed with foie gras – rather a proper cookbook, filled with recipes that I’ve loved cooking. And hope that you will too.”

Parker-Bowles’ latest venture has barely registered a blip on the British tabloids’ radar, although we expect a full-court press upon its release in the fall. Given Camilla’s tight-knit relationship with the press, it would be surprising to see anyone criticize her son for clearly taking advantage of the access presented to him. He’s not shying away from his royal connections because the cover of the cookbook has a crown front and center. If anyone else dared to do something like this (ahem, Meghan Markle), we know it would be a flurry of headlines.

It will be fascinating to see if Charles and Camilla help promote the book in any capacity as the publication date draws closer. It’s an interesting turn of events because Parker-Bowles has no issue with leaning as far into the royal family as possible for profit.
