The Duke and Duchess of York will care for Queen Elizabeth II's beloved corgis, a representative for Prince Andrew and Duchess Sarah Ferguson confirmed to USA TODAY on Monday.

The couple, who divorced in 1996, still both reside at the Royal Lodge on the Windsor estate and will care for the dogs collectively. The Duchess and the queen were said to have bonded over dog-walking over the years, even after her divorce to Prince Andrew.

The queen died Thursday at 96 and, according to reports, had four living dogs. The two dogs the Duke and Duchess of York will take care of are Pembroke Welsh corgis, named Muick and Sandy.

Corgis became associated with the monarch throughout her life, as she was regularly photographed with one of her Welsh corgi nearby.

Two of the queen's other dogs, Lissy and Candy, will also need a new home. Lissy is a cocker spaniel, while Candy is of a mixed breed – a corgi and a dachshund.

According to BBC, the queen has regularly received puppies as gifts in the last several years. The royal household's breeding program is believed to have created the dorgi breed, a corgi mated with a dachshund owned by her sister, Princess Margaret.

The queen has owned numerous mixed-breed dogs over the years. Her affection for corgis, in particular, dated back to her childhood when she grew close to King George VI's corgi, Dookie. She was given a Pemborke Welsh corgi named Susan for her 18th birthday in 1944, and after Susan's death in 1959, corgi children were passed down up until the death of Willow in 2018.

The Washington Post reported that the queen was hit hard by the death Willow, who the last tie to Susan.
