Quantum Leap: The 5 Things We Want to See in Season 2 (and 1 Thing We DON’T)

Quantum Leap wrapped Season 1 with most of our lingering questions answered.

More from TVLine

Earlier in the NBC drama’s freshman season, we learned that Ben leapt to save his fiancé Addison, who was destined to be murdered by Martinez in the future. The finale then revealed that Martinez was sent by the U.S. government to kill her because officials blamed the Quantum Leap program for society’s eventual collapse.

Ben prevented Addison’s death from happening, stopping Martinez once and for all, and it looked like he would finally make the leap home. However, the episode ended before we could see him appear in the Quantum Leap accelerator, and the lengthy delay in his expected return hinted that Ben may not have made it back after all. A sneak peek at the Season 2 premiere — spoiler alert — confirmed that Ben was, indeed, still stuck traveling through time.

Hopefully, this won’t be a permanent situation like with Sam Beckett (played in the original Quantum Leap series by Scott Bakula). That’s just one of our many hopes for Leap‘s sophomore season, which premieres Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 9/8c on NBC.

Read on below for the five things we hope to see in Season 2, as well as the one thing we DON’T.

WANT: Janis working with the team full-time

WANT: Janis working with the team full-time

Her time in the sci-fi show’s first season was criminally short, and we’d love to see more of her in the coming episodes. As Al Calavicci’s daughter who was denied the opportunity to work in the rebooted Quantum Leap program (citing her emotional connection) and who then conspired with Ben to make that unauthorized leap, her backstory was intriguing. Then she began cooperating with the team, and it became more and more evident that she would be a great fit among them. Think of how fun it would be for Ian to have a partner in crime who understood everything they were saying and could help them dumb it down for the others. Plus, with her ties to the original series, her constant presence would be a great tribute to Al (and portrayer Dean Stockwell).

WANT: More teamsters in the imaging chamber

Don’t get us wrong: Addison and Ben are the heart of the story, and their dynamic during each leap keeps the show grounded. However, the series could benefit from letting the others have a turn in the imaging chamber on occasion. Not only would this keep things fresh, it also would allow the audience to get to know the rest of the ensemble on a deeper level. We saw this briefly with Jenn, who took the reins in the episode “Ben Song for the Defense,” putting her legal expertise to good use helping Ben save an innocent man as a defense attorney. Moments where the others shine, like Ian watching Gia play basketball in “Let Them Play” and Magic helping Ben figure a way out of his containment cell in the finale, are net positives.

WANT: More celebrity guest stars

One of the benefits of the show’s leap-of-the-week format is that we get to see new faces drop by in each episode. Season 1 featured some great guest stars, like This Is Us alum Justin Hartley dashing around town as a 1980s bounty hunter, Deborah Ann Woll (Daredevil, True Blood) portraying a pop singer from the 1970s, and Brandon Routh (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow) stepping in as Commander Alexander Augustine, a younger version of Addison’s father. With a new season ahead, we’ve love to see more familiar names show up in the unique scenarios that only Quantum Leap can provide.

WANT: The Quantum Leap team letting loose

This is a cool bunch, but we only ever see them in the workplace, which can get stressful, given that Ben’s leaps don’t ever go as planned. This hardworking team deserves a break, and so it would be nice to see them let loose once in a while. A trivia night battling it out against Quiz-Team-a Aguilera? Iconic. Jenn’s sardonic commentary while watching Real Housewives with Ian? Legendary. The possibilities are endless. Let these people have some fun!

WANT: Sam Beckett brought home

Fans of the original Quantum Leap were left hanging when the series finale revealed that Sam never made it back. We would love to see him finally return home and get the happy ending he deserves. However, this all hangs on portrayer Scott Bakula changing his mind about appearing in the revival. In September 2022, he announced that he made the “very difficult decision to pass on the project” and had “no connection with the new show, either in front of the camera or behind it.”

Still, the door remains open if Bakula ever decides to drop in. “We would love to have him. There is no Quantum Leap without Scott Bakula,” series star Raymond Lee previously told TVLine. “I hope he can watch the show and sign off on it, and one day agree to be on it. But the offer is out there.”

DON’T WANT: Another Leaper X

DON’T WANT: Another Leaper X
DON’T WANT: Another Leaper X

We thoroughly enjoyed Martinez’s villainous Season 1 arc trying to kill Addison for what he believed was the greater good. A fellow leaper showing up at the most inconvenient moments during a jump to wreak havoc? Riveting. But that thrilling story came to a satisfying conclusion with Martinez’s death in the finale, and bringing in another evil leaper would feel like a cheap rehash. Maybe we’ll feel differently in potential later seasons, but for now, we’re good on that.
