Q Burdette (‘Survivor 46’ exit interview): ‘I played hard, but I came up short’

On Wednesday’s 12th episode of “Survivor 46,” two of the closest players in the game began to make secret plans to blindside the other at the next vote. When reward and immunity challenge wins set things in motion, and turned others on their heads, the “smoke screens” were lifted and Q Burdette, long a target of many players in the game, was the latest victim of a major blindside with an idol in his pocket. Read on for his “Survivor 46” exit interview from the end of the episode.

Though Q has known himself to be a primary target in the last few weeks of the game, he still managed to become another season 46 player — in a long string of them — to be voted out with a hidden immunity idol in their possession. Q’s idol was newly found this episode after Venus Vafa went home with it in her pocket last week. He shared knowledge of his idol with his closest ally Maria Shrime Gonzalez, but they both felt confident enough that their plans to blindside Charlie Davis would go off without a hitch. They were wrong. After his elimination, Q stated the obvious: “They blindsided me with an idol in my pocket, but I’m happy about the game that I played.”

“I played hard,” Q continued. “But I came up short and it happens in life sometimes.” Q has always held the perspective in the game that when it’s his time to go, it’s his time to go and he can only do so much to convince others to play on his side. This week, he and Maria thought that they the votes of Kenzie Petty and Liz Wilcox on their side against Charlie, but they didn’t. Kenzie and Liz have been coming for Q for many weeks, on both a personal and game level, so it’s curious how and why Maria and Q thought they’d be willing to work with him now.

Kenzie and Liz were instead firmly on the side of Charlie, who has been laying the groundwork with them for a few weeks on a plan to take out his own best friend in the game, Maria. When Maria saved herself with the immunity challenge win, it was an easy switch for them to target Q instead, not knowing he had an idol. Maria and Q’s ego and confidence was their downfall, leading Q to not play his idol and for Maria to be caught in a failed attempt to take out Charlie in the 4-2 vote.

Referencing his own reward challenge win from a few weeks ago (the one that left Liz screaming from the sidelines), Q closed out his exit interview by a promise to his wife: “Oh, and Emily baby, we goin’ to Applebee’s and we gettin’ that appetizer platter and we gonna share it and what you don’t eat, I’ll eat it.”
