PyeongChang crowd goes wild as unified Korean women's hockey team scores first goal
It took eight periods of play for the unified Korean women’s hockey team to score its first goal, but what a moment it was.
The Korean team entered Wednesday’s game still looking for its first goal after back-to-back 8-0 losses against Switzerland and Sweden. There seemed to be a very real chance the Koreans could finish the tournament without a goal. Having that final loss come against a fierce rival in Japan, would have been a bitter pill to swallow.
Randi Heesoo Griffin made sure it wasn’t so.
A North Carolina native, Griffin has Korean heritage through her mother and played college hockey at Harvard.
When she’s not playing hockey, she’s pursuing her PhD in Evolutionary Anthropology at Duke University according to the Harvard Crimson.
The unified Korean team would eventually lose to Japan 4-1 and finish the tournament 0-3, but the team’s presence in PyeongChang is about something bigger than sports and win-loss records. Giving the two countries a moment to celebrate together is a victory in itself.
