Pusha T, T.I. & Jay Electronica Urge Young People of Color to Vote: ‘It’s Time That We Let Our People Go’

As the clock continues to tick on Election Day (Nov. 8), U.S. citizens are racing to the ballots to cast their votes.

In honor of the occasion, Florida’s 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East recently teamed up with Militia Design for a short film to encourage young African American, Latino, and Haitian/Caribbean people to take initiative and vote in this year’s presidential election.

The film “It’s Time” — executive produced by Marvin Bing, the producer of the “Young Gets It Done” concert — features a handful of hip-hop notables like T.I., Pusha T and Jay Electronica, among others, urging voters of color to take action. “My people, it’s time. It’s time that we end this mass incarceration system,” says Pusha T in the inspirational video. “It’s time that we fix this flawed criminal justice system. It’s time that we let our people go.”

“We decided to put this out on Election Day because it’s time to tell a different story from communities often ignored in election Get Out The Vote strategies,” said Bing in a statement. “‘It’s Time’ tells stories from artists and activists from those ignored communities.”

Elsewhere in the clip, Electronica asks, “How long is it going to take for us to realize that it is on me and you to take control of our life circumstances individually, and as a community, you know? “We can’t look for somebody outside the community [to] come clean up our communities. We have to clean up our own communities. We can’t look for somebody outside the communities to help police our communities. We have to police our own communities.”

Tip echoes similar sentiments and explains why it’s time to begin moving forward. “It’s time to end systemic racism. It’s time to end mass incarceration and privatized prisons,” he says in the video. “It’s time to begin proper education in our under-served areas of society. It’s time to begin to accept responsibility and accountability for our actions.”

Watch the vocal rappers as well as Power star Rotimi, Florida rapper Lajan Slim, and even Kodak Black (who calls from St. Lucie County Jail) all urge people of color to make a change below:
