‘Pure Genius’: CBS Not Ordering More Episodes Of New Medical Drama Series
CBS has opted not to order additional episodes of new medical drama series Pure Genius beyond its original 13-episode pickup. The series will wrap production on Dec. 15 after completing Episode 13. Pure Genius is not being formally canceled and theoretically remains in contention for a Season 2 renewal though its chances are considered slim at best. All produced episodes are expected to air, and the series will remain in its Thursday 10 PM slot for the time being.
Pure Genius, from Universal TV and CBS TV Studios, has been a soft but stable performer, opening with a 1.1 Live+same day adults 18-49 rating and logging a 0.9 demo L+SD rating for its three subsequent airings.
Pure Genius, the lowest rated among CBS’ new fall series, is the only CBS freshman show not to get a back episodic order. The network gave 22-episode pickups to all three shows that premiered during premiere week, Kevin Can Wait, Bull and MacGyver; and 19-episode orders to late entries The Great Indoors and Man With a Plan. Additionally, sophomore medical drama Code Black, which also had a 13-episode order, received a three-episode pickup to go up to 16 episodes.
CBS has four additional drama series that it needs to accommodate for midseason: newbies Doubt, Training Day and Ransom and sophomore Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.
Created by Jason Katims, Pure Genius centers on billionaire genius James Bell (Augustus Prew) who built Bunker Hill Hospital determined to revolutionize healthcare and treat the rarest and most challenging medical mysteries, at no charge. Bell persuades maverick surgeon Dr. Walter Wallace (Dermot Mulroney) to be his Chief of Staff. Bell’s team includes Dr. Zoe Brockett (Odette Annable), Dr. Talaikha Channarayapatra (Reshma Shetty), Dr. Malik Verlaine (Aaron Jennings), Dr. Scott Strauss (Ward Horton) and Angie Cheng (Brenda Song). At Bunker Hill, Bell pairs the most brilliant minds in medicine with the most forward thinkers in technology, and cuts bureaucracy out of the equation, all in the interest of saving lives, including his own. Katims, Michelle Lee and David Semel produce.
