Puerto Rican Producer Tainy Still Hasn't 'Processed' His Grammy Nom for “Data: ”'I'm So Honored'“ ”(Exclusive)

Tainy is nominated for best música urbana album at the 2024 Grammy awards

Tainy, a Puerto Rican record producer, is still in shock about his Grammy nomination.

Speaking to PEOPLE at Spotify's Best New Artist party on Thursday in Los Angeles, the producer opened up about receiving a Grammy nomination for his 2023 album Data.

"It is crazy. Everything has changed so much. When I started, this wasn't in my possibilities of something that could happen because I come from Puerto Rico," Tainy, 34, says. "What you probably would aim for would be the Latin Grammys, and that's even stretch."

"To see how we've grown and how we got here — I put out my first album last year and seeing that it's being recognized [at the Grammys], it's just crazy. I don't think I've processed it completely yet, but I'm so honored," he continues.

Tainy released Data in June 2023 and it featured collaborations with some of the biggest names in Latin music like Bad Bunny, Myke Towers, Jhayco, Arcángel, Wisin & Yandel, Young Miko, J Balvin, Daddy Yankee, Rauw Alejandro, Feid, Julieta Venegas and more.

While the collaborations made for a great album, Tainy says it was hard to get everything done on time.

"They're all on tour, working on their albums [and have] busy schedules," he says. "I had to travel a lot to get things done at the time that the label needed me to get things done. So it was such a crazy, amazing, stressful, but just happy feeling to be a part of that journey. I loved every moment."

Though Data —which is nominated for best música urbana album — featured several dream collaborations, Tainy hopes to work with Frank Ocean one day.

"I'm a huge Frank Ocean fan. So that's somebody that I would love to see what could happen in the studio, even if it doesn't come out, even if nothing works from that day," he says. "But just to have the experience with somebody that inspires me so much would be really special."

In 2021, Tainy tapped Bad Bunny and Venegas for "Lo Siento BB:/," which was later featured on Data.

"Working with Tainy is always a pleasure. The world knows that when we get together we make magic," the "Me Porto Bonito" singer, 29, said in a press release at the time. "What's so special about this track? That in this one I have the honor of sharing vocals on the same track with Julieta Venegas, something I never imagined and that's why it fills me with so much emotion."

"This track is a dream come true. It's been a long journey to finally get to release a part of the work from my upcoming debut album and I think there's no better way than this to kick it all off," Tainy added. "I am a huge fan of both these artists and to have been able to bring them into my creative space and create something really different not heard before makes me so happy!"

At Thursday night's Spotify event, all Grammy best new artist nominees, with the exception of Fred again.., took the stage for a performance. More stars in attendance included Reneé Rapp, Kesha, Madison Beer, Sofia Reyes, Conan Gray, Damiano David and more.

The 66th Grammy Awards will take place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday, Feb. 4 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
