Publix is closing its GreenWise Markets. What that means for the last in the Palm Beaches

BOCA RATON — The last eight Publix GreenWise Market stores in Florida are being converted into traditional Publix supermarkets. Of the two GreenWise Markets left in South Florida, there is only one in Palm Beach County.

Palm Beach Gardens' Publix GreenWise Market closed its doors five years ago, making Boca Raton's GreenWise Market at Lakeside Centre the last of its kind in the county.

On May 19, the Lakeland-based supermarket chain said it is phasing out its natural and organic food-forward market concept. The only South Florida GreenWise Market location outside of Boca Raton is in Fort Lauderdale. The others are in Lakeland, Nocatee, Odessa, Tallahassee, Tampa and Mountain Brook, Alabama.

What is the difference between a regular Publix and a GreenWise Market?

Publix's GreenWise Market stores are about half the size of a traditional Publix and mimic the design of Lucky's Market stores. Lucky's declared bankruptcy three years ago. The focus of a GreenWise Market is fresh, organic and prepared foods. The options for household staples like toilet paper, garbage bags and cleaning products are less than in the chain's traditional stores.

When will Publix GreenWise Markets close?

Publix has not announced a timeline for when the South Florida GreenWise Markets will be converted. The stores will transition at different times, "based on various factors related to the project," spokespeople for the grocery store told the Business Journal.
